Chronic Urticaria and Acupuncture

Chronic urticaria (hives) involves recurrent episodes of itchy, raised welts lasting more than six weeks, often with no identifiable trigger. Chronic spontaneous urticaria affects approximately 1% of the population and involves mast cell degranulation releasing histamine.

In TCM, chronic urticaria reflects wind lodged in the skin, often combined with blood heat or blood deficiency. Blood heat urticaria uses SP-10 (Xuehai) to cool blood and LI-11 (Quchi) to clear heat; blood deficiency type uses SP-6 (Sanyinjiao) and BL-17 (Geshu). GB-31 (Fengshi) and GV-14 (Dazhui) are core points for dispelling wind from the skin in all patterns.

A 2020 randomised controlled trial in Allergy compared acupuncture to sham treatment in 200 patients and found that true acupuncture significantly reduced urticaria activity scores, antihistamine use, and itch intensity, with benefits sustained at three-month follow-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help chronic hives?

Research supports acupuncture as a complementary treatment for chronic urticaria, with studies showing reduced frequency and severity of outbreaks, decreased itch intensity, and lower reliance on antihistamine medication. Acupuncture appears to modulate the immune response and stabilise mast cells.

What causes chronic hives from a TCM perspective?

TCM attributes chronic hives to pathogenic wind trapped in the skin layers, combined with an internal imbalance. Common patterns include blood heat (red, hot welts worse in warmth), blood deficiency (pale welts, dry skin), and qi deficiency (recurrent episodes worsened by stress or fatigue).
